Surrealism found in the mountains - Unknown Georgian genius artist living in Svaneti

Fridon Nizharadze, this is the name of a Georgian genius artist who lives in the country’s most remote region of Svaneti. The artist does not have a family and lives together with his brother in Ushguli, community that is considered the highest inhabited point in Europe. Fridon’s artworks are distinguished for their individualism, deep meanings and bright colors. It is a pity that the painter and his incredible artworks are not known to 95 percent of the population. As the painter says, he never had an exhibition and he paints just for himself. He lives a plain and natural lifestyle, breathes fresh air, is surrounded with nature and does not use a cell phone. When being a peasant, he used to draw on the pieces of paper. It is noteworthy that Fridon studied in the famous Tbilisi Academy of Arts, yet he did not stay to live in the city.

Upon entering his small and modest house, the visitor finds oneself in an incredible gallery or a museum hidden in the great Caucasus Mountains. When asking the artist why he chose surrealism, he simply answers, because realism is imitation.

His surrealistic paintings with Georgian motives are a new word not only in Georgia’s history of arts but generally in the world of arts.

“ I have been painting since being a child. When I was a child I used to go out completely naked and draw on snow with coal”, the artist says in the interview with one of the journalists.

“Nature, world, universe and human are my main inspirations,” the artist says.
