“Ali and Nino” movie featured on BBC – Love story of a Georgian woman and Azeri man

BBC reported on the “Ali and Nino” film, shot based on a novel with the same name by an Azerbaijani writer.
Ali and Nino, a period romance set in Baku during World War I, premiered at the prestigious American Sundance Film Festival on January 27.

The novel called Ali and Nino was written by an Azeri writer, Kurban Said in 1937. It tells the loves story of Ali Khan Shirvanshir, the male descendant of a royal Muslim family, and Nino Kipiani, a beautiful Christian Georgian princess. This young couple went through many difficulties, including religious, cultural and ethnical differences.

Chief Director of the movie, three-time BAFTA award winning British filmmaker, Asif Kapadia, shared with BBC’s Talking Movies his reasons for adapting Ali and Nino to the screen.

The cast includes Adam Bakri, Maria Valverde, also known from movie “Three meters above the sky,” Mandy Patinkin, Connie Nielsen, Riccardo Scamarcio, Homayoun
Ershadi and others.

The story of Ali and Nino was immortalized by a monument in Georgian coastal city of Batumi. This moving (in both senses) statue is one of the main hallmarks of the city and – it is quite safe to say - one of the most popular monuments in the world. Recently, it was mentioned by a Hollywood actor, Ashton Kutcher, who published a photo of the monument with the inscription – “This is truly moving.”
