Svan funeral ritual granted the intangible cultural heritage status
The National Agency for the Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia has granted the ‘Svan Zari funeral ritual’ the status of intangible cultural heritage.

It is important that the status was given on the basis of the report by National Folklore Center of Georgia presented few months ago. The center’s new initiative is that all intangible heritage monuments have to be given the status of national monument. The corresponding report will be submitted to the National Agency for the Cultural
Heritage Preservation in a few days.

It is interesting that all the funeral rituals and customs that originated centuries ago, are still preserved in Svaneti.

Zari is a very important component that gives integrity to the funeral procession. Functional and intonational analysis of this ritual proves that it really is very old.

Zari is the only folk song that should not be taught at home. Rather, it is better to practice somewhere outside of the house, by the river or in the forest. Svan folk groups even avoid singing it on stage.
