Georgian ballerina of Bolshoi Theater presents Puma Swan collection
New York City Ballet members presented the most elegant collection of PUMA in January and Nelly Kobakhidze, a Georgian ballerina who is a member of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater, tells us about her everyday routines, what the life of a ballet dancer is like and whether there is any kind of confrontation between Bolshoi and the New York City Ballet.

American ballet was founded by George Balanchine, an American choreographer of Georgian ethnicity, whose real name was Giorgi Balanchivadze. When you think of the NYC Ballet, Balanchine is the first name that comes to mind, Nelly says: “A Georgian genius. It would be great if we, Georgians, had more ‘Balanchines’ like that. George Balanchine was an extremely musical person and when you perform his dances, you merge with the music. NYC Ballet has a very interesting style and you can learn a lot from them,” Kobakhidze says.

Unlike other companies, when the NYC ballet members exercise, they wear Puma leggings and tops. As for Nelly, she only wears them when being filmed by Vogue.

“When we begin exercises, we wear athletic pants. Maybe this is a coincidence, but I wear Puma as well,” Kobakhidze smiles. “I rarely wear high-heel shoes in everyday life, because I always prefer casual ones, which are a lot more comfortable.”

Nelly says ballet is her religion.

“We have one goal: to express our feelings as clearly as possible. You have to feel this freedom, when you are dancing on the stage, when the reality is
lost and another reality is opening in front of your eyes. You will never be able to act emotionally if you never experienced how it feels to fall down. You cannot feel white without knowing what is black. You cannot feel love without having experienced disappointment and torture,” Nelly Kobakhidze says.

There is always an intrigue.

“To live with a team without being involved in it and achieving success at the same time is unrealistic. However, you should never think of a little disappointment as a tragedy, especially when you have children. You never pay attention to unimportant things. Whether they gave or did not give you a particular role, or when you think the group is not what is has to be like, these are very unimportant things.”
