Tobacco price goes high in Georgia: Which brands do the changes apply to
Some brands become more expensive, but the rising in prices have no direct connection with the rising of excise tax, the Ministry of Finance says. Rather, it is linked to the demand-delivery misbalance, the Ministry explains.

From January 2016, some brands became as much as twice the previous price. The changes apply to Parliament, Marlboro, Chesterfield and L&M.

On December 11, the Parliament of Georgia has approved the new law on raising the excise tax on tobacco products and alcohol.
According to that decision, from January 1, 2016, the excise tax is 20% higher. It means 0.20 Lari on 20 filter cigarettes, 0.05 Lari on 20 non-filter cigarettes, 0.4 Lari on each cigar, 0.5 Lari on 20 cigarillos. As far as pipe and chewing tobacco is concerned, the excise tax is 0.5 Lari on a kilogram. On filter and non-filter cigarettes the excise tax has risen from 5% to 10%.

The government explains that this law is in complete concordance with EU legislation.
