Rare dwarf walnut trees in Tianeti, Georgia
What do you know about dwarf walnuts? Probably not much, because this species of walnuts is just beginning to appear in our country and the demand on them is quickly increasing. The dwarf walnut tree gives the first harvest five years after planting, but it gives a lot of them. In order to get to know more about this new species, shin.ge decided to visit the village of Sakdrioni.

This beautiful village is located in Tianeti municipality and the Dolidze family is well-known here. Eva Otarashvili, the housewife, does any job with pleasure, even when it is hard to do for a woman. As a result, her garden amazes everyone who sees it.

There, on a large territory, more than 70 dwarf walnut trees are planted in one row.

“I planted them four years ago, in autumn and I trench them twice a year, in autumn and spring,” Eka says.

- How do you make the saplings?

- I breed them here in my yard. I plant the walnuts in autumn, with spikes above. When I planted the first row, the spikes were below and in the second row they were above. However, all of them turned out to be good. Then I decided to plant more trees on a bigger territory. So I moved them here and planted them in one row – 7 meters in width and 7 meters in length. You have to foresee the distance between the trees. 7-8 meters is enough for this species. When they grow, they must not touch each other. Other kinds of walnuts grow bigger, so they need more distance, like 10 or 12 meters.

- How do you look after these trees?

- They like a lot of water, especially during drought. As I have already told you, you have to trench them twice a year – in autumn and in spring. I trench them in round form and make deep trenches, so that they receive more water. Manure is also very good.

- How did you find out about the dwarf walnuts?

- My brother gave me three walnuts and told me it was a very good species. I did not know then that it was called ‘dwarf walnut’ and neither did I know it would bring the first harvest on the fifth year. Generally, I was not interested in walnuts back then. In fact I have always dreamed of a big garden with a lot of trees and
fruits. When I planted the first walnut tree, several years later it gave only 24 pieces of walnuts. Only then I knew that it was a dwarf walnut. So then I decided to make bigger garden and plant more trees. And I did it in 2011.

These trees need a lot of water. However, in the places where there are ground waters, these walnuts will never grow, because water damages its roots. Generally, dwarf walnuts will grow in any region where there are mountains. I think this species is brought from Abkhazia.

- Is it a rare species?

- Taking into consideration that it gives the first harvest on the fifth year, it means that it is a very special kind of walnut.

- Why do you do this? Do you sell them?

- For some time I was only giving them away as a gift. Nobody was interested in planting these trees in spite of the fact that it is a very good thing and they do not spoil. Do you know what I think? These nuts are not only a source of income. When I see these trees full of walnuts, it will be my wealth. And they are tasty and good for health as well. Sometimes my husband helps me in trenching the trees. I love my dwarf nuts like my own children.
