A Polish photographer Magdalena Konik has taken some impressive photos in Tusheti, Georgia’s historic mountainous region. She depicted the life of Tushetian shepherds as well as stunning nature of the region in her images and here is the story she told Georgian Journal:

“Last year I saw shepherds going down with their herds from Omalo [Tusheti] to Alazani Valley [Kakheti] for the first time and I wanted to see how they spend the whole year. I lived in Georgia so I decided to visit them during the winter and I was really happy when I was allowed to go with them to Tusheti on foot in May. Whenever I met them I discovered more of their history, traditions. At first, many people didn’t treat me seriously, just like a tourist who wants something from them. Also, I couldn’t do or see many things because I am a woman. But after some time, when they saw I respect their rules they showed me a part of their world.”

That is how her photography projects started: first about traditions of Tusheti, aiming to show the best Tushetian heritage, history, nature and the second one – about the history of Caucasian tribes in East Caucasus, comparison of traditions and also history of people living in mountains starting from Khevi, through Khevsureti, Pankisi Valley, small valleys with
their own traditions to Tusheti.

At the moment she is working to obtaining the necessary information and some day she wishes to tell about these places by photos, showing their spirit and beauty to the world.

“I’ll continue those projects next year when I come back to Georgia. These photos were taken during the hike with shepherds, when I was traveling to Tusheti alone with my tent or with groups as a guide, during Dartloba, just before going down to Alazani Valley with herds for winter,” Magdalena said.

The images from the video were captured in the villages of Omalo, Bochorna, Girevi, Dartlo and adjacent area, accompanied by the song called “How beautiful Tusheti is”.
