Khevsureti, located in the northern part of Georgia, is one of the most remote historical regions of the country. This incredible footage by photographer Giorgi Nikolava reflects the gorgeous landscape and thrilling medieval towers of Khevsureti, in particular famous villages of Shatili and abandoned Mutso that in some way resembles Peruvian Machu Picchu, built by Incas. This area of Georgia used to serve as a defensive wall against the invaders from the north. This mountainous region in the Greater Caucasus borders with Chechnya and counts nearly 3000 inhabitants. It is noteworthy that the village of Shatili known for its captivating 60 towers and that lies on the river Argun is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some of the towers are still inhabited while some have been transformed into guesthouses offering the visitors exotic environment for spending nights and experiencing real culture and spirit of Khevsureti. The site
is located 148.6 km from Tbilisi, capital of Georgia and it takes several hours to get there by car.

As for Mutso village, it is a medieval settlement built on a sharp rocky mountain. It is home to approximately 30 medieval fortified dwelling units arranged on vertical terraces above the Mutso-Ardoti gorge. Neighboring Tusheti region, Khevsureti is also considered as one of the most inaccessible parts of Georgia. In winter it is impossible to get there due to heavy snowfall.
This beautiful footage is accompanied with Georgian folk song named Tushuri performed by a musical group called Kelaptari.
