Unique aerial photo from Georgia’s glorious Holy Trinity Cathedral

The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi commonly known as Sameba is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church

located in the capital of Georgia. Constructed between 1995 and 2004 by architect Archil Mindiashvili, it is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world and considered to be one of the largest religious buildings in the South Caucasus. Sameba is a synthesis of traditional styles dominating the Georgian church architecture at various stages in history and has some Byzantine undertones.

Typologically, the Sameba cathedral has a cruciform plan with a dome over a crossing resting on eight columns. The entrances are from three sides – western, southern and northern portals. Few people know that the cathedral consists of two parts – the lower or underground part and higher or over-ground part. From point zero up until the cross on the dome, the height of the cathedral is 86.1 meters (the cross
itself is 7.5 meters high). In the underground part there are two floors. Besides, in the underground part there are 5 churches and in the over-ground part – 4. Sameba cathedral consists of the following churches: the Church of the Archangels, the Church of John the Baptist, Saint Nino church, Saint George church, Saint Nicholas church, the Church of the 12 Apostles and the church of All Saints.

The aerial photograph taken by Giorgi Shermazanashvili (fb.com/shermazana) inside the Sameba Trinity cathedral is one of the most unique images in the history of this church.

This spectacular temple is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Georgia.

Here are some more views of the Cathedral:
