Georgian students’ invention wins gold medal at international contest
Tbilisi hosted the annual International Young Inventor Project Olympiad (IYIPO) where more than 400 young inventors from 45 countries took part and presented their projects. The winners of the competition were selected by the judges consisting of scientists and professors. The invention of siblings from Georgia Karlo and Ana Khutsishvili won the international contest and were awarded with gold medal. Their invention named Life Saver can find and safely clear landmines saving lives of hundreds of people worldwide. The contest took place on April 21-22 and around 150 various projects were presented in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, biology and informatics. Life Saver came in the first place in the field of physics- engineering and authors of the project were gifted with laptops.

“Our work received high evaluation from the judges and was distinguished from other participants’ projects. We are expecting funding and we will start constructing the device in summer. I am satisfied with our achievement, because the aim of our team when registering in this contest was to occupy first place, since we have put considerable effort in this project. We are happy that we achieved our goal and this victory will serve as a stimulus to continue working on new projects. It took us two weeks to assemble our device, but I have been thinking about this idea for many years. We have more ideas and high level projects to carry out in the future that will help to save human
lives worldwide”, - Said Karlo Khutishvili, author of Life Saver in the interview with Georgian Journal.

The idea to create Life Saver came to its inventors when they discovered that one person dies in every 19 minutes from a landmine explosion. The invention named Life Saver consists of two drones that both can find and safely clear landmines without risking human lives. The device is operated from an iPad or ordinary computer; it can remotely fly over long distances and safely clear the mines. Life Saver has both wings and wheels so that it can freely travel through air, land and even water. It was designed in such way that the device can fold its wings and deploy tracks in order to overcome any obstacles on its way in contrast to other technologies with similar functions. “Through this project we wanted to prove that Georgians can also invent helpful devices for the world and reach success in different fields”, - Young inventor said.
