“Indefinable” American Painter at Karvasla

On June 16, at Tbilisi History Museum (Karvasla), affiliated with the Georgian National Museum, opened a solo exhibition of American (Florida) artist Michael St. Amand - “Human Condition: Myths And Mayhem”.
The exhibition is the world premiere of St. Amand’s complete “Mundata Sonata” and the “Scribble” Series, along with other captivating new works.
St. Amand’s paintings affect the space in which they hang. His use of multi-layered raw, vibrant color, mixed media and fluorescent pigments put the viewer on the
spot. His paintings vibrate with energy and light, making the art to interact with the audience; they feel where the energy from one source is going to another source, and one color is moving to another color. The artwork pours brilliant bursts of color at the viewer. The artist’s paintings change as a person’s physical relationship to them changes. St. Amand’s paintings give the viewer a sense of the artwork changing in front of a viewer’s eyes.
St. Amand works were presented at the group exhibition “Punctum Contra Punctum” at the Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi in 2012. He has earned numerous awards for his work. He has exhibited his art nationally and internationally, including Paris, New York City, Germany, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Art Basel Miami to name a few. His work can be found in many corporate and private collections.
Maka Razmadze, painter, co-founder of ‘Art Contact Tbilisi’, which was one of the organizers, commented for us: “We decided to arrange the annual international festival in Tbilisi and Georgian regions. Michael St. Amand was invited to the exhibition ‘Punctum Contra Punctum’. He suggested arranging his solo exhibition. He is also our partner. Within this project, we not only intend to bring American and European artists but also send Georgian painters abroad in order to popularize Georgian art and Georgia itself. It comprises not only painting but all kind of visual art.”
Mr. Amand has been painting for the last 35 years. He told us: “There are several different series that are shown right now. We are premiering two of the series in Georgia now. As for the style, I m told by many art-critics that I am indefinable, as far as the way I paint, are concerned – it’s non-derivative. So, it’s not like I paint abstract expressionism, or pre-impression ism. I just paint.”
Ketevan Kintsurashvili, art historian and critic also told Georgian Journal about her impressions of this painter: “The American type of painting is primarily associated with a wide-scale, large canvas. Michael St Amand’s works are also of a large size and scale. In them a man’s figure (maybe of the artist himself?!) with his back to us is often seen inviting us to the depth of the picture, so that we can view the phenomena depicted on canvas, move around in space together with him. The initial impression in St Amand’s works is created by colors, their brightness and intensity. They are the main characters. We then begin perceiving various events, united on this colorful plane. Amand’s canvases are enormous collages, in which painting combines with graphics, photography, word (letters). And a three-dimensional world of impressions is created, in which the figurative and abstract, concrete and general create the galaxy of thoughts.”
Supporters of the exhibition are the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia, US Embassy in Tbilisi and Art Contact Tbilisi. The exhibition will stay at Tbilisi History Museum till June 30, 2013. From July 3, the exhibition will be moved to Signagi Museum, where it will function till July 15, 2013.
