Hundreds of Georgian movies archived in Russia to be returned home
21 October, 2016
Around 1000 Georgian films shot between 1916 and 1990 and kept in Russia’s Gosfilmofond, a  state-run fund, will be soon transferred to Georgia. In the aftermath of 20-year talk between Georgia and Russia the precious collection of Georgian movies will ultimately find their place in their homeland.

According to Zurab Abashidze, Georgia’s Special Envoy to Russia, the archive will be transferred to Georgia time by time and the process will start in November.

“Ministry of Culture of Georgia signed an
agreement with Russia two years ago. Yet before transferring the movies, we had to undergo important procedures such as inventory of the materials and determining their condition, since the archived films should be transferred onto high-quality tape”, - Zurab Abashidze said.

As famous Georgian director Lana Ghoghoberidze said, this agreement is a quite an important event, that will help bring back Georgian movie to its native land.

As it is known, the first Georgian film shot in 1916 is kept in Russia’s archive. All the incredible Georgian films have been kept in Gosfilmofond up to now, since Georgia was part of the Soviet Union between 1922-1991.

The very first Georgian film named Kristine was shot between 1916-1918 based on Georgian writer Egnate Ninoshvili’s tale under the same name. The film is about a poor peasant girl Kristine who is raped by a nobleman. The humiliated girl, rejected by the society, tries to commit suicide, yet she is saved by a stranger who takes her to the city. Ultimately Kritine finds herself in the city’s brothel, where she is treated in a bad way and becomes ill. The poor and sick woman ends up in the hospital and passes away in the loneliness. Here we present to you a short part of the movie.
