Legendary Georgian actor Givi Berikashvili dies at 83
A celebrated Georgian actor and comedian Givi Berikashvili passed away at the age of 83 yesterday, Edmond Abashidze-Minashvili, his colleague, wrote on his Facebook page.

"People’s Artist of Georgia, the laureate of Shota Rustaveli, Kote Marjanishvili and Ipolite Khvichia prizes, a shining star of Georgian theater and cinema, Givi Berikashvili has died at the age of 83," Abashidze-Minashvili writes.

The actor’s health condition had deteriorated recently and according to the information spread yesterday,
Berikashvili was admitted to the intensive care unit and connected to the breathing apparatus.

"He caught cold, which was later complicated by pneumonia and later on everything became even more serious. We were late in taking him to hospital and now the situation is very grave. The doctors are doing a great job," Kakhi Kavsadze, legendary Georgian actor and Berikashvili’s long-time friend told journalists yesterday.

Givi Berikashvili was born on May 12, 1933, in the village of Kolagi, in Gurjaani Municipality. In 1956 he graduated from the Institute of Theater Arts in Tbilisi and for the rest of his life has worked in different drama theaters around Georgia, including Rustavi Drama Theater, Sokhumi Drama Theater and Kote Marjanishvili Drama Theater in Tbilisi. In 1979 Berikashvili was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Georgia, for his many unforgettable roles on the stage as well as in the movies, including his charcters in the films “Londre”, “Wine Thieves”, “The Wishing Tree”, “Data Tutashkhia”, "Sikvaruli Kvelas Unda" ("Everyone wants to love"), “The Turtledoves of Paradise”, etc.
