Georgian ballerina Nino Ananiashvili awarded by Japan’s Emperor
Georgian prima-ballerina Nino Ananiashvili has been awarded with a prestigious order by Japan’s Emperor. On April 29, in Tokyo, the laureates of Japan’s Emperor Awards 2017 were announced. Georgian prima-ballerina and the art director of Tbilisi Z.Paliashvili Opera and Ballet Theater is among the winners. She was awarded with ‘The Rising Sun and Golden Rays’ order. Ms. Nina Ananiashvili was honored for her significant contribution to strengthening cultural exchange between Japan and Georgia as well as developing Japanese ballet society through
long-term and various activities dedicated to Japan. The award given to Ananiashvili is of highest rank. In 2011 it was given to another famous ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Japan’s Emperor Awards are held from 1875 and the current system was set up in 1964. There are two types of this award: ‘The Order of the Rising Sun’ and ‘The Order of the Holy Treasure’. The former is normally given to the non-Japanese. In 2017 105 non-Japanese were selected and 34 of them were finally awarded. Nino Ananiashvili was the only one to be awarded in arts category.
