HBO purchases Georgian film Hostages about the flight from the USSR

HBO Europe has purchased Georgian film Hostages about the true story of “Airplane Boys”, directed by Rezo Gigineishvili. The company has released a list of films it has obtained and the latter one is included as well. The film about the real story that occurred in Soviet Georgia will be premiered on TV along with other films by HBO.

Hostages are based on true events surrounding a 1983-year attempt by a group of young people in Tbilisi to kidnap a
plane to flee the communist regime and to escape to the United States.

Georgian writer Lasha Bugadze worked on the screenplay together with the director. The film gives the audience an insight into the psychology of the characters and the environment in which they live.

The massive scenes were filmed with the participation of the army and the aircraft T-134 was bought specially for the shooting.

Hostages is a joint Georgian-Polish-Russian production financed by both Georgian National Film Center and Poland’s National Film Center. Tina Dalakishvili, Irakli Kvirikadze, Giga Datiashvili, Giorgi Grdzelidze, Beka Lemonjava, Giorgi Tabidze, Giorgi Khurtsilava, Vakhtang Chachanidze, Ekaterine Kalatozishvili, Darejan Kharshiladze, Merab Ninidze, Avtandil Makharadze and Misha Gomiashvili play the leading roles.

As a reminder, recently one more Georgian production My Happy Family directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross has been purchased by Netflix. Georgian/German/French coproduction My Happy Family is the first Georgian film for which Netflix obtained global distribution rights.
