Irakli Charkviani’s biggest concert of all time – Unknown details about mysterious Georgian musician

On August 15, with the support of Check In Georgia, Black Sea Arena, Bravo Records and Altervision Group presents project – Irakli Charkviani - History. The event will be held at Black Sea Arena, Batumi, Adjara, Georgia’s seaside region.

The concert is commemorates famous Georgian singer, author and songwriter Irakli Charkviani.

The musician’s most popular songs will be performed by popular Georgian singers and bands such as : Soft Eject/ Green Room/ Loudspeakers/ Erekle Deisadze & Beqa Kundalini/ Robi Kukhianidze/
Georgia’s National Symphony Orchestra led by Nikoloz Rachvelishvili.

Irakli Charkviani (November 19, 1961 – February 24, 2006), also known under his pseudonym Mepe ("The King"), was a Georgian poet, prose writer, and musician.

Charkviani was known for his eccentric image and poetry, and for eclectic music, which spanned alternative rock, electronic music and hip hop.

Charkviani graduated from the Department of Western European and American Literature, Tbilisi State University. His debut in 1976, with the indie rock project Arishi, passed unnoticed, but the later band Taxi had a greater success and recorded the homonymous album in 1988. In the 1980s, several of Charkviani’s lyrics and short stories, noted for their rebellious character, were published in Georgian literary press. Early in the 1990s, Charkviani emerged as one of the leading artists on Georgia’s alternative and electronic scene. Leading the projects Children’s Medicine (1991-1992), and Georgian Dance Empire (1993), he performed throughout Georgia as well as abroad, particularly in Moscow and Eastern Europe. Charkviani’s debut solo-album Svan Song was recorded in Germany in 1993 and proved to be a significant influence on the Georgian alternative music of the 1990s.

He composed music for the feature film "Orpheus’s Death" in 1995 and went on to record his second album Ap’ren in 1997, followed by the single Sakartvelo (Georgia) in 1999 and the albums Amo and Savse in 2001 and 2004, respectively. During the same period, he chose the pseudonym of Mepe, that translates to "The King" in Georgian. Irakli is author of several poems, stories, and a novel.

Charkviani was found dead, reportedly of heart problems, at his apartment in Tbilisi on February 24, 2006, leaving several unpublished songs which were subsequently released as the album Dzirs Mepe ("Down with the King") in 2007.

In May 2013 Irakli Charkviani was posthumously awarded Georgia's Rustaveli Prize for his significant contribution to the development of contemporary Georgian culture.

On November 19, 2016 a monument in the memory of Irakli Charkviani was installed in the central area of Tbilisi.

Despite the fact that his music is familiar to people of any age , Irakli Charkviani still remains a mysterious person. To get to know Irakli’s real personality closer we talked to the singer's father, Gela Charkviani, who probably knew him best.

“Irakli's career as a singer began in 1976 when he started performing with the band Arish, but his first connection with art was through literature. First of all he was a poet, author and then a musician", - recalls Gela Charkviani.

"Irakli's music and writings are multifaceted, different people perceives it in a different way, so his songs can be very well interpreted. He was always ahead of time and his generation and this is the most important thing for an artist. When I am asked for autographs, they often tell me to sign as "Father of the King".

The most important thing about Irakli is that he made some important breakthroughs. First of all, he adapted rock music to Georgian language, which was not an easy task. It was hard perceive rock music in Georgian, but Irakli managed it. He expressed himself and his music through extraordinary video clips, what seemed unacceptable to the society at that time, but now it is quite normal phenomenon.

People like Irakli show their talent at a very early age . He was just a kid when could already think in a creative way, it could be felt through his language, poems, and I think the latter one is the most important component of Irakli's creativity Only a poet sees the world metaphorically. If you are a poet, then you are capable to create something valuable in other genres of art.

When I was playing, he used to stand by my side and listen. It was already clear that he would do something interesting in music. When I first listened him performing his own song, I told myself that he would write good songs because this song was of a very high quality.

In addition, Irakli was very attracted by literature. He wrote stories, and at the age of 18-19, he was more known in this field, because his stories and poems were published in the Tsiskari and other famous editions. Gradually, all this was incorporated in his music. So, when people say that Irakli was a singer, it is a bit strange to me, he was a singer, of course, he had an incredibly interesting voice, full of tragic , which is a very rare thing, but in the first place, he was the author," Gela Charkviani recalls.
