Three Georgian authors nominated for the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in literature
November 14 marks the birthday of famous Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. Astrid Lindgren is one of Sweden’s most vivid authors, who unleashed a nine-year-old fictional free spirit named Pippi Longstocking on the world. Her works have been translated into more than 90 languages. She renewed children's literature and combined artistic integrity with commitment to the rights of children and young people.

To honor her memory and to promote interest in children’s and young adult literature around the world, the Swedish
government founded an international award in her name, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

235 candidates from 60 countries are nominated to the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Last year, German writer and illustrator Wolf Erlbruch received the award. The candidates were presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 12, 2017. Among the nominees are three Georgian authors, who traditionally have been presented by the National Library of Georgia.

The name of the laureate of 2018 will be announced on March 27.

Poet, writer and translator Vasil Guleuri was born in 1971 in Gori (the regional capital of Shida Kartli Region, eastern Georgia). He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Georgian Technical University. In different years he worked as a correspondent in the different local newspapers. In 2007 he came in the second place at the Georgian literary competition Tsero for the cycle of children's poems Sabavshvo Bagi. (Kindergarten).

Vasil Guleiuri also translated the works of Sergei Yesenin, Nikolai Gumilev, Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, Bella Akhmadulina, Joseph Brodsky, Veronica Tushnov, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christina Lavant, Jean Genet, James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling and many others.

The second Georgian nominiee , children's writer, critic and publicist Guram Petriashvili is a famous author of fairy tales in Georgia. He was born in 1942 in Lentekhi (capital in Georgia's western region of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti). In 1964 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at the Tbilisi State University, in 1978 - the Film Directing Department at the Rustaveli Theater Institute (Tengiz Abuladze's workshop). Petriashvili is a screenwriter, director and actor.

He began writing the fairy tales in 1980. Among the author's works are Fairy tales of a small town, The history of a man who loves rain, Adventure of Eli and Rara, One hundred poems and other books.

Tea Topuria, born in 1977 in Sokhumi, (the capital of the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia) is a prize-winning writer and poet. In 1998 she graduated from the faculty of Journalism at Tbilisi State University. Since 1998 Tea Topuria has been working as a journalist in the field of Human Rights and Environmental Protection. Tea has written a collection of prose and poetry The Mint Threshing Floor (2007), a poetry collection Ecocide (2011) and a number of highly acclaimed books of short stories for children, including The Holidays of Paradea (2011), Tales too Good to Sleep Through (2011) and One Long Day on Another Planet (2014), a collection of stories Two Rooms in Cairo (2016).

Nowadays Tea Topuria is regarded as one of the most talented and notable contemporary Georgian authors in Georgia, contributing to children’s literature.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is the biggest prize in children’s literature. The object of the award is to increase interest in children’s and young people's literature, and to promote children's rights to culture on a global level.

5 million Swedish Kronas (705 000 US Dollars or 525 000 Euros) are given to one or several winners. The competition was founded in 2002 and since then it’s the world’s second or third most important literary competition.

The award laureates are chosen by a jury with broad expertise in international children’s and young adult literature, reading promotion and children’s rights. The 12 members include authors, literary critics, scholars, illustrators and librarians. One member represents Astrid Lindgren's family.

The annual cycle begins no later than December, about 9 months before nominees are announced, 15 months before the winner is announced and 18 months before the presentation.
