Five Georgian films to be presented at Brussels BOZAR arts centre
Five successful works by Georgian directors will be screened at Brussels’ BOZAR Centre of Fine Arts within the frames of a new festival Bridges, East of the West during the next week.

From 17 to 21 January, BOZAR will be launching the Bridges Festival, dedicated to cinema from the countries on Europe's eastern fringes: Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Belarus.

Georgian cinema has a rich culture, but due to
the hardships the country underwent, Georgian film was put in the shade for some time. Now the new era has started for Georgian cinematography and more and more promising director are emerging with their individual style.

“There is Georgia with its social and introspective cinema, contemplating family life, landscapes and traditions threatened by the opening up of borders” – The official website of the BOZAR Centre of Fine Arts reads.

It is noteworthy that Georgian part of the program includes Blue Mountains, Eldar Shengelaia’s 1983 satire comedy on bureaucracy. The rest of the selection features films from independent Georgia, released from 2015-2017.

Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains is one of the funniest Georgian movies in the history of Georgian cinema. It reflects absolute anarchy among the society during the times of Soviet Union. The film is about a passive young writer Soso, entering the Soviet-controlled bureaucracy of Georgia attempting to get his novel published only to be neglected and compartmentalized at every turn.

Blue Mountains remains a masterpiece of the most absurd humor possible. The film was selected for screening as part of the Cannes Classics section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

When the Earth Seems to be Light, an award-winning documentary by Salome Machaidze, Tamuna Karumidze and David Meskhi, will be screened within the frames of festival, featuring the impressions from the lives of young skaters, artists and musicians in Georgia, creating their own open spaces.

This documentary is a story of young and free people living in post-soviet country, where modernity clashes violently with post-Soviet ruins.

The audience attending new festival will also see Hostages,a 2017 drama film directed and written by Rezo Gigineishvili and co-written with Lasha Bugadze. The movie tells dramatic story of young Georgians trying to flee harsh Soviet regime and start new life in United States. Hostages describes real events that took place in 1983 when seven young Georgians, all from intellectual elite families, attempted to flee the Soviet Union by hijacking an airliner.

It should be mentioned that Georgian actor Irakli Kvirikadze, who plays the role of one of the main characters in Hostages, was recently named among the 10 best emerging actors from Europe that will be honored at the Berlin International Film Festival 2018. He convinced the jury with his "natural presence and overwhelming energy" which he demonstrated in Hostages.

Mariam Khatchvani’s 2017 feature Dede will also be shown at the Brussels festival. As a reminder, Dede was bestowed with the Cultural Diversity Award, a prize granted under the patronage of UNESCO.

It is especially important that the film is shot in the historic region of UNESCO's World Heritage Status in Svaneti, Georgia’s remote highland. Dede tells a story of young woman living in Georgia’s historic Svaneti Region, where the harsh traditions are still preserved. Dede is about love and the ancient traditions, which still govern the lives of local people.

The Georgian cinema program will also present emerging director Ana Urushadze’s widely known and successful feature Scary Mother (2017), a recipient of awards at Sarajevo Film Festival and Locarno International Film Festival.

Scary Mother focuses on the position and the role of women in today’s society in Georgia. It tells the story of a 50-year-old housewife, who struggles with a dilemma: she has to choose between her family life and a passion for writing she has repressed for years.

Screening those amazing films can be considered to be another great success and international recognition of Georgian cinema. According to the organizers of the festival, it will be a "unique chance to discover on the big screen a little known cinema in the presence of its filmmakers”.
