‘BREAD IN GEORGIA HAS POLITICAL PRICE’

‘IN CASE FLOUR PRICE GOES HIGHER, WE’LL HAVE TO INCREASE BREAD PRICE’

At the world stock-exchange the wheat became consEma Tukhiashviliiderably expensive and its price reached the historic maximum – 1 ton for $340. It’s $40-50 more compared to the last year.

Analysts connect the wheat price-hike with bad climatic conditions and low yield in wheat-producing countries and considering the fact that Georgia mainly consumes imported wheat they don’t exclude that the price-rise on it will soon be reflected on the

price of bread.

Expensive wheat hasn’t come to Georgia yet but the tendency of flour price-rise can be observed for the last two weeks. 50 kg sack of first quality flour costs GEL 38-40 and on the average it’s GEL 5-8 more expensive. This hasn’t affected the bread-price yet but the bread-producers don’t exclude price-rise in case the flour price increases further.

Malkhaz Dolidze, head of #4 bakery: ‘Flour became more expensive but we manage to retain old price on bread at the expense of decreasing the profit… But if flour-price goes higher we’ll be forced to raise bread-price.’

Irakli Lekvinadze, expert in economic issues: ‘Today the price-rise on bread and flour suits nobody because it is directly connected with politics. In the food diet bread takes big share especially in the low-income countries; for this reason even insignificant price-rise causes discontent of the people. Bakeries are cautious too in order not to irritate the government and they use all the efforts to keep the price at possible-low.’

Levan Silagava, head of Georgian grain farmers’ association: ‘It’s almost three years that the standards of wheat production have been discussed. If such a standard is set, it will be possible to compare whether this or that product corresponds to the norms. For the time being this is impossible. On August 10, we are expecting American agricultural report about the world crop resources. According to the analysts’ prognosis the yield in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, envisaging droughts and inundations will considerably decrease. France is planning to convene G-20 special session in order to make main exporters of grain not to impose restrictions on export. It’s thought that this is mainly directed at Russia in order to impose certain obligations at her.’

Several days ago MP Jondi Baghaturia noted that on the market one sack of flour became GEL 5 more expensive. But he named other reasons for price-rise. According to him, from the adjacent territory of ‘Didube Plazza’, representatives of Government took flour and building material from the traders in order to help the natural-disaster-struck population but paid nothing to them. The traders were forced to raise price per 1 sack of flour at least by GEL 5 in order to compensate the losses inflicted by the government. Thus, as he explained, bread in Georgia has political price!’
