Presidential Yearly Voyages Cost over GEL 2 Million
GEL 2 336 857.14 was spent on the official visits made by Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia abroad since January 1, 2012 to January 31, 2013, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), a non-governmental watch-dog closely monitoring governmental expenses, informed on June 5, 2013. The information is based on the data provided by the state chancellery of Georgia. However the provided information does not disclose details of the expenditures such as costs of fuel, tickets, guards, hotels etc. separately as
well as the exact number of the delegation accompanying Georgian president in his official voyages costing unreasonably high sum to such a small and poor country like Georgia.
Out of the total outlays made on business trip during the reported period GEL 405 104.43 was spent on official visits to the US and Germany in January of 2012 however the official web-page of the president’s administration includes no information on the flip to Germany. GEL 402 036.73 was spent on another trip to the US and France in March of 2012. In the US Saakashvili went on “investment and economic” purpose where he met with top officials of the US Senate and International Monetary Fund (IMF). Of the French tour the web-page is silent. GEL 169 991.94 financed Saakashvili’s attendance at the 58th Assembly of NATO on November 12, 2012 in Czech Republic and his visit to Belgium on November 13 where he met the presidents of the EU Council and Euro Parliament. GEL 167 879.78 went on trips to Germany and Korea in February of 2012 to attend the security conference in Munich and nuclear security summit in South Korea. In May of 2012 Saakashvili made a statement on the expected visit of officials of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable development as well as the Ministry of Education and Science to Brazil saying that “Boys and girls miss a tour to Brazil. In June his Excellency ordered to allocate GEL 151 415.41 from his administration budget on the said tour to Brazil. After parliamentary election of October 1st, 2012 bringing the power shift in Georgia, Saakashvili still a leader of the now ex-ruling party went to nine countries [Romania, United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Czechia, Ukraine, Armenia, Poland, France and Afghanistan] of by official visits and GEL 705 550.94 was spent on these voyages.
The new government somewhat curbed Saakashvili’s appetite to spending as it refused to move the Georgian president’s budget for the fourth quarter of 2013 in the second one as Saakashvili asked for recently, Nodar Khaduri, Minister of Finances, said to Palitra TV past week. As far as the fourth quarter includes October with scheduled Presidential elections this year and Saakashvili has no legal right to be elected again Khaduri refused.
“In the fourth quarter someone else will be the president apparently,” he said adding that GEL 10 million defined by the Presidential fund at the moment is fairly enough to Georgian president.
