Gudauri and Bakuriani received the status of summer resorts
There exist people who do not really fancy having a vacation at a noisy resort and instead prefer to go somewhere quiet and solitary. A large part of these people ends up going to mountain resorts, which are tranquil, peaceful and have picturesque landscapes.

Bpn.ge became interested in finding out more about the current condition of Gudauri and Bakuriani and how welcome tourists are made to feel there. In order to talk about this, we addressed Aleksandre Onoprishvili, head of the
“Mountain Resort Development Company”

Aleksandre Onoprishvili:
In the beginning of JuLy, our organization, “Gudauri Development Agency”,took under our jurisdiction and management the skiing resort of Didveli, which is near to Bakuriani. Thus, we renamed ourselves “Mountain Resort Development” Company. The government decided to develop that resort even further, providing several million lari for shaping both Bakuriani and Didveli up.

- What condition are Gudauri and Bakuriani in now?

- Many people are not aware that for the first time in our history, Gudauri and Bakuriani received the status of summer resorts. Now I can proudly say that they all-season resorts. Gudauri and Bakuriani are usually packed with vacationers. Bakuriani’s aerial ropeways are always active, while in Gudauri they are operational only during weekends. Summer season was opened on the 13th of July and in the month that passed since then, we received over 10 000 visitors. Most of them are from Ukraine, followed by visitors from European countries; there are plenty of Israelis visiting Gudauri as well. Naturally, besides foreigners, we have plenty of Georgians coming as well.

- What do you offer to your vacationers?

- We made new tracks for cyclists, which are freely available to everyone. Nature of both Didveli and Gudauri is amazing, and foreigners like it a lot. This is part of the reason why we had so many guests this month. Naturally, we tried to make them feel welcome: there are many opportunities for entertainment in Bakuriani, not to mention a modern, well-equipped movie theater. There are a lot of bars and restaurants as well, unlike Gudauri, which is a much calmer place. This resort is far more suitable for residents of Tbilisi who want to hide from the summer heat for at least a weekend. A lot of guests are attracted by tranquility of this place and its crisp air, which accounts for constantly full hotels. Didveli also has cycling tracks and café-bars, but its main attractive factor is its nature and stunning vistas. And of course, we have a rescue team at the ready and safety norms are always upheld.

- How much do hotel rooms cost and how should one rent an apartment?

- Price of a hotel room begins at 35 GEL and can go up to 300-350 GEL; the more comfortable the room, the more it costs. As for private housing, price of a room begins at 15 GEL. Summer is slowly drawing to an end, but we expect at least 6-7 thousand more visitors. The influx is non-stop and it is not going to change anytime soon. We may have to extend the season to the 15th of September.

- What are your future plans for the winter season?

- The first thing we are planning is implementation of a unified ticket policy that would enable the vacation-makers to use the same ticket for both Gudauri and Bakuriani. Let’s say, for example, that a person obtained a ticket for Bakuriani, but it will enable him to go skiing in Gudauri as well. Naturally, this will extend to summer seasons as well: whoever wants to use the cycling tracks will only have to hold one ticket for both Gudauri and Bakuriani. Currently the tracks are undergoing repair: we are clearing stones and other debris away and expanding some of them. Our Austrian partners were invited to oversee the repairs. We also decided to restore the Didveli funicular, which is currently out of order due to being damaged. Aerial ropeways will be switched off in October for maintenance and repairs, making sure that they are ready for the winter season.
