Rachan ham, Kharagauli Caesar’s Mushroom, Lagodekhi watermelon, Choporti tomato and tkemali (sour plum) may be given geographic signs, Sakpatenti (Geopatent) says.
In all there are close to 130 different products that will be given their respective geographic signs, including Colchis hazelnut and laurel, Khelvachauri tangerine, Tabatskuri carrot, Marneuli potato, etc.
Geographic sign is the name of a geographic area and it is used for the products whose characteristics and qualities depend on that particular location’s environment (soil, water, climate, traditional methods
of preparation etc).

It should be noted that the products bearing such geographic signs cost 2.5 times more than those cultivated in other places.
Apart from that, the geographic signs play a significant role in regional development of a country, as well as contribute to creating new jobs and profits. They also decrease the number of people that want to leave the country and contribute to the development of tourism.

As of now, out of all the products that are cultivated or made in Georgia, more than 40 bear their respective geographic signs and a large part of them is exported. These are chacha (Georgian grappa), Adjarian chechili cheese, Meskhetian chechilio cheese, Megrelian sulguni, Svanetian Sulguni, dambalkhacho cottage cheese, Machakhela honey, Akhalkalaki potato, Kutaisi greenery, Tkibuli mountain tea etc.

The exhibition and degustation of products with geographic signs will be held during a conference organized by Geopatent and World Intellectual Property Organization in Tbilisi, which was opened today. The aim of the conference is to raise awareness of entrepreneurs and farmers on the benefits of geographic signs both in Georgian and international markets.
In the frames of the conference that will last for 2 days, the license agreement will be signed between the OriGin non-governmental organization and OriGin Georgia. This agreement envisages helping the farmers and entrepreneurs in finding international contacts, as well as in marketing, branding and management issues.
