Georgia’s huge Enguri Dam to transform into a tourist zone

The Enguri Dam represents not only a hydroelectric station, but it is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking sights of Georgia. As long as it is located on the main road of the World Cultural Heritage Monument Zemo Svaneti (Upper Svaneti), this place is very attractive to tourists and locals alike.

Soon Engurhesi will get additional function and become a huge tourism center.

The Enguri Dam is a hydroelectric dam is located the Enguri River.
Currently it is the world's second highest concrete arch dam with a height of 271.5 metres.
Georgia will have a very large and multifunctional tourist zone - "Engurhesi" tourist center, which will become a world-class attraction, - The Prime Minister of Georgia stated about it at the presentation of the concept of Engurhesi tourist zone.

While the arch dam is located on the Georgian controlled territory in Upper Svaneti, the power station is located in the Gali District of region Abkhazia of Georgia.

Construction of the Enguri dam began in 1961. The dam became temporarily operational in 1978, and was completed in 1987.

the European Commission granted €9.4 million to Georgia for urgent repairs at the Enguri HES. In total, €116 million loans were granted by the EBRD, the European Union, the Japanese Government, KfW and Government of Georgia. In 2011 The European Investment Bank (EIB) loaned €20 million in order to complete the rehabilitation of the Enguri hydropower plant and to ensure safe water evacuation towards the Black Sea at the Vardnili hydropower cascade.

The facility's arched dam, located in the town of Jvari, was included in the list of cultural heritage of Georgia in 2015.

According to Giorgi Kvirikashvili, this increasingly important project is about to start. There is only one project of this kind in the whole world - Hoover Hydroelectric Station in USA, located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the states of Nevada and Arizona, where tourist complex is arranged as well.

The Head of the Government of Georgia is convinced that, based on its uniqueness, the Engurhesi tourism center will definitely become Georgia’s trademark.

“Fortunately, today we have a very special, unique "Engurhesi " building, whose arch dam is the second by its size in the world and therefore, it deserves the status of a monument of industrial and cultural heritage, " - the Prime Minister noted.

According to preliminary estimates, this tourist zone will be quite profitable and will receive 400 thousand tourists annually.

“The fact that Engurhesi is located on the main road of the World Cultural Heritage Monument Zemo Svaneti (Upper Svaneti) gives us the basis to think that the new tourism zone will become a tourism center of regional importance and will have a significant impact on the country's economic development ", - Giorgi Kvirikashvili said.

According to the concept of the tourism center project of Engurhesi, which is the result of joint work of many people and specialists of different fields, tourism infrastructure will be located on 157 hectares.

Cognitive and Discovery Center, the museum-informational space, the rope road, the open concert space, the naval infrastructure, world’s highest 280-meter elevator, the tunnels on the Enguri River, and components for the extreme lovers will be arranged in new tourism center.

The implementation strategy for the project was developed in cooperation with the leading European company - "Koko Architecture" and experienced Estonian specialists. Also, the tender was announced for designing, for which the government allocated 2 million GEL.
