Tbilisoba 2012 – When Asia and Europe Meet

On October 5-7, Tbilisi hosted its festivity “Tbilisoba”, a fine tradition that originated in 1979. Tbilisoba was traditionally marked by its participants dressed in national costumes and staged theatrical scenes.

The noblemen dressed in Chokhas and noblewomen wearing Georgian national garments, would look down from their balconies at the ‘tivi’ (wooden raft), sailing along the Mtkvari River. Today,  you can catch sight of phaetons in the streets of the city, when the Tbilisoba begins. The wind brings the tunes of a street-organ

and songs of Ashughs. The city begins the time-travel, as if the middle ages are returning. Not only the local people are involved in the festivity. This is the mid-autumn and the right time and place for all farmers from different corners of the country to present their villages in the best way, by arranging  autumn markets. That is why Tbilisoba is also called “Festival of Autumn”.

“This year, Tbilisoba festivity is celebrated for the 33rd time. We are trying to preserve the tradition of this festivity – its incomparable charm and coloring. We try to make it interesting for children, for youth andfor middle-aged population as well. This year, as usual, the hub of the events is concentrated in Old Tbilisi –Gorgasali Square, Europe Square, Chardin Street surroundings, Abanotubani district of bath-houses, which abound with concerts and various events. I hope that everyone enjoyed this year’s festivities,” Neka Sebiskveradze, Head of the Centre of Cultural Events of Tbilisi City Hall, commented.

As for today’s event, there was hardly any Tbilisoba festivity without awarding honorary citizenships of Tbilisi. Apart from Georgians, the City Hall also decided to give these honorary titles to some of those 60 foreign guests who have visited Tbilisi on this event from different sister and partner cities. This is the exhibition that will last for three weeks; it is dedicated to them, to the diplomatic corps and to the honorary citizens of Tbilisi – the exhibition displays Georgian adornments along with 3D photo-exhibition.

Tbilisoba festivity is closed with the ceremony of choosing the honorary citizens of Tbilisi. This year was not an exception. It took place at Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art.  Jamlet Khukhashvili – famous sport commentator, dramatic soprano Tsisana Tatishvili – star of Georgian opera, Mikheil Davidov – doctor-oncologist, Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Russia, Bidzina Murghulia -  distinguished public figure, Academician of the Academy of National and Social Relations of Georgia,  Shahin Arip Oghli Movsumov, investor of the multifunctional block of flats ‘Dirsi” and Kakha Tsabadze, composer, Chairman of the Union of Georgian Composers were awarded the honorary title. The event proceeded against the background of  eye-catching 3D photo-exhibition of the exponents of Georgian National Treasury as well as the display of Georgian adornments.

Tsisana Tatishvili commented: “I did not doubt earlier that I was a Tbiliseli (Tbilisi dweller), but I am grateful that they appreciate me and conferred on me the title of honorary Tbilisi citizen.”

Jamlet Khukhashvili said: “There are a lot of awards in Georgia and fortunately,  I have received part of them. But being an honorary Tbilisi citizen is a real pleasure. It cannot be compared to any other awards for a person who was born, raised and being desperately in love with Tbilisi city.  It is incomparable. Therefore, I am extremely happy that I have joined the big army of honorary citizens of Tbilisi that comprise such legendary people. To cut a long story short, I will only mention here my colleague Kote Makharadze and his spouse Sopiko Chiaureli.

In these two days, Tbilisi was transformed into a meeting place for Asia and Europe, as it used to be in the Middle Ages and that’s when Tbilisi displays  its peculiar charm.
