World Where Improvisation Reigns
On February 16, Jazz series starts in Georgia for the fourth time. Jazz is not only for jazz lovers. Georgians are aware that this is the style of living and they want to participate in that life. This is the world without politics, where only beauty, music and improvisation reign. Tbilisi jazz festival is a brand that is awaited with impatience. Some years ago, another annual Black Sea Jazz Festival emerged in Batumi. Meanwhile, music lovers and all those who
have any connection with modern art, can listen to the distinguished stars at monthly jazz series starting from February and ending in May. Tbilisi is jazzing out and amazing the stars, who come from far away places, and who have so much to say and tell through music. The jazz masters are surprised at seeing so many people, youngsters included, so eager to listen to them and express their own inner feelings.
Some people have a hobby to collect postcards. Others collect books. However, there are some who collect great musicians. Such is the entire team of Eastern Promotion company, who have devotedly served to the development of the musical taste and good ear for music since 1990s, when a small post-Soviet country like Georgia was recovering itself from Perestroika repercussions, civil war ruins and bloodshed. And they succeeded. It was the period when no business and no show business of such scopes could be imagined. However, they did it and they are evolving, offering more and more interesting concerts to more and more well-prepared public, educated by them. Kakha Kandelaki, son of Gaioz Kandelaki, who is a pioneer of jazz promotion in Georgia, continues this job with great pleasure, bringing joy and pleasure to many. Everybody is grateful for that. “Last year, Robert Glasper, our jazz series participant, was quite a new fruit for Georgia. However, the compilation that he presented here, won a Grammy award for the best R&B album. We risk inviting unknown people and Georgians admire them,” Kakha Kandelaki from Eastern Promotion told Georgian Journal.
It is a novelty; real club environment is created, as jazz series take place in the Event Hall where only 300 people can be seated. Tbilisi remembers mega stars, when Jamiroquai, Joe Cocker and stars like that performed at the Tbilisi Concert hall. It was a kind of magnet that attracted more people. Now, such “popular” steps are not necessary. Of course, current stars are real ones, but a real jazz out is there now. “This year, for jazz series we have selected radically diverse genres, but they are all the highest league musicians. The theme of familiarity is not topical; now everyone comes who likes music, as our prices are rather moderate compared to other countries. The second guest to arrive in March will be Keiko Matsui, Japanese smooth jazz keyboardist, then American jazzwoman Stacey Kent and in May, Lee Ritenour, American jazz guitarist will visit Georgia with the band to cap this year’s jazz series.”
Nils Petter Molvaer, also known as NPM, has the honor to open the series. He is a Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer, and producer. Molvaer is considered a pioneer in fusing jazz and electronic music. He recorded at ECM, a very prestigious studio the most successful album of his Khmer. Thanks to the electronic utensils, Molvaer gives quite peculiar sound to trumpet. He offers an experimental jazz, enriched with jazz, rock and even pop elements. He has two more band participants, but he also has a lighter, sound editor and vide engineer and they play on the background of the video graphs. “One could imagine the synthesis of Pink Floyd, Miles Davis and Jimmy Hendrix. I recommend all those who have any connection with modern art – cinema, poetry, painting, etc. This will be a real master-class for them. A lot of soundtracks are on his credit. Such musical style will be presented for the first time in Georgia,” Kakha Kandelaki concludes and adds that he is looking forward to February 16.
