Georgian-Estonian Gala at Tbilisi Conservatoire
On February 28, at Tbilisi State Conservatoire, gala concert of Estonian National Opera and Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre took place. It was pleasant to have an opportunity to listen to the representatives of two friendly countries on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of Estonia’s Independence, few months before the planned Saarema Opera Festival in Estonia, which this year hosts three opera troupes from Georgia – Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi Opera companies. The concert was opened by
the speech of the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Georgia, Mr. Priit Turk, who greeted the Georgian Minister of Culture, Ambassadors of other countries, Estonians and Georgian friends. “This year, Estonian Republic is celebrating its 95thAnniversary. Our history, like Georgian history, has been full of controversies. We have suffered great tragedies like losing independence,” he said, adding that “German and Soviet occupations or deportations, have been interchanged with positive achievements and periods, including Singing Revolution, restoration of independence, or joining European family.“

The Ambassador pointed out that opera is a genre of emotions and passions – it is full of tragedy, but it also abounds with love and hope. “Estonia and Georgia have always had particularly close ties. This year one of the main themes in our cultural relations will be opera and ballet. In connection with our 95th anniversary, Tbilisi State Ballet and Opera Theatre together with Batumi and Kutaisi Opera Theatres will participate in one of the main cultural events in Estonia – Saaremaa Opera Festival in July.”
Reportedly, ambassador’s delight is caused first of all, by his love for opera and also by the fact that the festival will take place in his hometown – Kuressaare – marvelous resort town by the Baltic Sea. “I would like to use this opportunity and thank the Minister of Culture, Mr. Guram Odisharia and the personnel of the Ministry along with the Director and the staff of Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre for the close cooperation and partnership, which makes all these feasible.”
The concert presented Artur Kapp, Romance Soloist Andres Koster (Tenor – Estonia). It was followed by Alfredo Catalani – Wally’s aria from Opera “la Wally”, Soloist Irina Taboridze (Soprano – Georgia). Giuzeppe Verdi – Rodrigo’s aria from opera ‘Don Carlo’ – soloist Besik Gabitashvili, (baritone – Georgia). Georges Bizet’s “The Seguidilla” from opera “Carmen” was performed by Soloist Ms Juuli Lill (Mezzo- Soprano – Estonia). Franz Lehar’s “The Land of smiles”, Tchaikovsky Duet Lisa/Polina from opera ‘Queen of spades”, Guiseppe Verdi – Renato’s aria from opera “Un ballo in maschera’, Gaetano Donizetti’s leonara’s aria from opera “The Favorite”, Guiseppe Verdi’s Alfredos’ aria from opera “La Traviata” were also on the program.
The Estonian Ambassador also mentioned that our two nations look back at our histories with great passion. “But of course, even more we look with passion at the future of our countries. Let today’s concert be also a starting event of the ‘Year of Opera’ of our countries.”
