Art Museum Features its Rich Collections in Portrait Genre
On May 16, Shalva Amiranashvili Art Museum of the National Museum of Georgia opened the exhibition featuring collections of portrait art, dedicated to the International Museum day.
The origin of portrait genre in the culture of painting is connected with the Renaissance period when an especial interest to the person appears in the society, when the person opens his originality. In Italy, in the 15th century, during Quattro cento period the portrait went beyond religious compositions
and was defined in an independent genre – has found the secular character. The portrait does not only express external similarity of the person but has turned to a medium of his personal characteristic – opening his private world, his feelings. The humanist of Renaissance period Ludoviko Dolce considered that the portrait had especial influence on people. He wrote: “portraits of noble and virtuous people; I repeat, they adjust people to be kind and noble.”
Nino Khundadze, curator of the exhibition told us: “The idea of organizing this exhibition existed a long time ago. However, we made it coincide with the week dedicated to the International Museum Day. The Georgian National Museum always exhibits its collections at this remarkable date. Genre of the portrait is one of the most important ones in the history of art. We have quite interesting collections in this regard and therefore, today’s display has been organized. We aimed to show the correlation of the Georgian and European on the one hand and of the Iranian portraits on the other – similarities and differences and influences among them. The exhibition is chronologically arranged in order to be more obvious for the viewers to perceive. Georgian painting gets its start from the end of the 18th century and from the genre of portrait, which you can see here.“
Dali Gogorishvili, art historian, author of the Education Project, also talked to us: “The Arts Museum houses a very interesting exposition of Georgian, European and Russian samples of art belonging to the 17-20th centuries. This display is accompanied by the educational program that is open for different age groups, for school children as well as for family formats. It implies the short review-excursions as well as retelling the development of portrait genre, how they are presented, etc. Different activities are planned – making sketches, photo-sessions, etc.“
Portrait Art display gives a chance to track the development of the portrait genre features of the given period and take out interesting conclusions. From the works of portrait genre (concrete person, self-portrait, portrait type) pictures of one type, portrait of a concrete person and self-portraits have been selected for the exposition in order to show clearly the development of the portrait genre, its artistic interpretation, conformity of Georgian, European, Russian and Iranian portrait. The exhibition of Portrait art at Arts Museum will last until June 20.
