Tribe wins the Golden Prometheus Award at the Tbilisi Film Festival
The most important film festival in Georgia, the Tbilisi International Film Festival, came to an end. It ran from December 1st to December 7th, and featured 12 films for international competition, including the categories: European film forum, Horizons, Made in Germany, Country in Focus – Benelux, Director in Focus – Goran Paskalevic, Documentary World, Green Color, Georgian Panorama, Film Memory, Students’ films and Special Screening.

The festival was opened by Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s President and closed with Uberto Pasolini’s Still Life.
Among the competition films were: Hide and Seek, UK, by Joanna Coates, about which Front Row Reviews wrote: “One of the most bewitching and elegant British films of the last decade”; What’s My Name by Nigina Saifullaeva, Russia, telling the story of a confused identity; Line of Credit by Nutsa Alexi-Meskhishvili – Georgia/France/Germany – the director’s first full-length picture that has obtained a certain international acclaim about its criticism of capitalism and how credit can ruin individuals’geotv.ge lives; I’m Beso by the young director Lasha Tskvitinidze; Modris, a drama written and directed by Juris Kursietis, Latvia, screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the Toronto International Film Festival, 2014; Party Girl by the debutants Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis, France, who opened the Cannes this year with a social drama about the aging nightclub hostess; Tribe by Miroslav Slaboshpytskiy, Ukraine, about a boarding school for the deaf, having made an appearance at critics’ week at Cannes and London Film Festival; Barbarians by Ivan Ikich about Kosovo; Viktoria by Maia Vitkova about a mother without motherly instinct who against her will, gives a birth to a child who has no navel; and Violet by Bas Devos, a participant of Biennale, which depicts the story of 15-year-old Jess who witnessed his best friend get stabbed, his guilt, feelings, isolation, attempts to express what he feels to his family running the risk that they will consider him a coward, etc.
I am Beso by Lasha Tskvitinidze, a participant in the international contest this year, became the winner of national competition. This is the story of one small rapper boy who has a homosexual brother, a disabled father and a mother who is the family’s breadwinner. In the same national competition, Line of Credit by Nutsa Alexi Meskhishvili was rewarded the Prometheus Award for best directing.
Best actress was Mari Kitia for Brides, while Ilyas Salman of Corn Island was chosen as best actor.
The Silver Prometheus for best directing went to Juris Kursietis for Modris, the story of a-17-year old teen who is addicted to playing the slot machines. This addiction pushes him into intense conflict with his mother as well as with the law. It was screened at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The climax of the festival – the Golden Prometheus award for Best Film went to Tribe by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy. The Sergej Paradjanov Prize for the best poetic vision also went to Tribe.
