John Dodelande presents unique modernist exhibition in Georgia
Georgian National Gallery hosts a unique and unprecedented exhibition featuring the artworks of China’s leading contemporary artists. The exposition titled Constellation represents exquisite modernist and abstract artworks from John Dodelande’s private collection. John is a person behind the exhibition, who brought all the artworks by the distinguished Chinese contemporary artists together. He has
been based in Georgia for several years now and he has been captivated by the country’s multicultural atmosphere, landscape and, most importantly, individuality that he thinks must be retained. Besides his passion for art, John Dodelande is involved in business activities in Georgia. It is the first time that such kind of exhibition is held in Georgia and it is quite symbolic that it takes place on the very place where world’s oldest overland route, the Silk Road, connecting the East and West, used to pass. The event is of high importance and plays its role in res-establishing ancient connections between China and Caucasus. The person behind the exhibition and its organization is Ami Barak, an independent curator and a well-known critic based in Paris. The media partner of the project is „BIO International”and company’s founder and director Olga Babluani. The exhibition was officially opened on June 23 and it will last till September 11, offering the art enthusiasts unforgettable experience and cutting-edge examples of modern art scene.

“John is interested in Chinese contemporary art; he has very strong connection and relations to Georgia, so he decided to put an exhibition. The main pretext of the exposition is that Georgia is in the middle of the Silk Road and the re-enactment of this famous trade road on the air gave birth to this idea. It is noteworthy that Ana Riaboshenko, Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia, played a major role, as mediator, to make this exhibition happen and convince the National Museum to devote this space for the exposition”, - Ami Barak, art curator, told Georgian Journal.

The exhibition called Constellation presents giant murals and artworks done in different styles and performed with unusual techniques. For Georgian audience it is a perfect opportunity to see the world through different eyes, from contemporary and more global perspective. When looking at the artworks you feel that you are part of this universe, huge energy and there are no boundaries.
“I have been based in Georgia for many years, I have Georgian citizenship from 2010 and I have made few investments in the country. When I arrived  here, I thought it was a great country and a great opportunity to me to be based here. As for my love to arts, I am very interested in Chinese contemporary artists, since they don’t talk about political stuff, but more relevant things like humanity, technology and the lots of energy, yet the exhibition does not have one main message or target subject. The artists depict what they witness and talk to every country and every single person in the world. After Georgia the artworks will be presented in Azerbaijan and Kazakstan as well. We hope that this exhibition will give more energy to cultural and art scene in Georgia”, - John Dodelande, owner of the collection, said.

Although all the paintings are united under the same title, similarly to the Constellation (group of stars), each artwork is individual, conveys different story and stirs specific emotions within the viewer. Through the paintings one can see that these artists are global in their thinking and global in their motivation.

“It is pretty multiple and diverse and when you look at the works in a collection, they more reflect the personality of the collector and lead towards main purpose, main subject. These artists are more inspired by everyday life and everyday context. The title of the exhibition echoes the main artwork by Zhao Zhao named Constellational that incorporates series of paintings in which the artist reconstitutes the visual evidence of the after-effects of glass shattering. The artist’s painting has many meanings, but the starting point of the artwork was an accident. Author of the artwork had a car accident in which his head slammed into the windshield and as a result of which the glass was cracked. Inspired by the patterns of cracked window, he converted his personal story in a more global issue, an art issue. Ultimately, this led to his series of hyper-realistic paintings named Constellation based on bullet impacts of shatter-proof glass panes, which somehow remind of interstellar galaxies. A broken glass can be in the same time something that deals with psychology, so it may also be understood as violence with political context, but in reality constellation is a group of stars and in this exhibition all the young artists are already stars in the world of art. They are stars not only in their country, but they are renowned internationally. So now Georgian society has a perfect opportunity to see these masterful avant-garde artworks without going to New York. I am really confident that the public will really discover and appreciate this very strong and dynamic scene. I have had different experiences, organized a number of exhibitions and I realize that there is something that really interests global audience”, - Ami Barak noted.

Dear readers, art enthusiasts or simply curious people, who are interested about what is going on in the world, you should not miss out this opportunity to experience what today’s contemporary and global art is like. Georgian National Museum D. Shevardnadze National Gallery is awaiting you.
