Magnum Photos 70 - ‘A Russian Journal’ Revisited
Thomas Dworzak and Julius Strauss retrace the steps of Robert Capa and John Steinbeck. Magnum Photos, an international photographic cooperative, celebrates its 70th anniversary. 70 years have passed since Robert Capa, an acclaimed war photographer and the founder of Magnum Photos, and the Nobel Prize winning American author, John Steinbeck visited three Soviet Republics: Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.

The invaluable output of their journey was the unique evidence of the life of ‘Soviet citizens’, previously unknown to the international public.
Steinbeck’s and Capa’s accounts appeared in New York Herald Tribune and Lady’s Home Journal, and were followed by Steinbeck’s book A Russian Diary, illustrated with Capa’s photos.

To mark its 70th anniversary, Magnum Photos has come up with an idea to revisit the project through the eyes of a photographer and a writer of modern times, who would retrace Capa’s and Steinbeck’s steps 70 years later to describe the present life of people in the same areas.

The project ‘A Russian Journal’ Revisited has been implemented by a German photojournalist Thomas Dworzak, who is the current president of Magnum Photos and an expert on Russia and the Post-Soviet space, and the well-known British print journalist Julius Strauss, the former chief of the Moscow Bureau of The Daily Telegraph, who served as a war correspondent during the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Balkans.
