Exhibition of Mihály Zichy in Tbilisi - Illustrator of Knight In the Panter’s Skin
An exhibition of the artworks by famous Hungarian artist and illustrator of great 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli’s epic poem Knight in the Panther Skin opened today at Art Palace Tbilisi. Six of the artist’s original paintings and 27 high resolution copies of his artworks are displayed within the frames of exhibition.

The event is of high importance since
the artworks are brought for the first time to Tbilisi from the National Gallery of Hungary in Budapest especially for the exhibition which opened today, and is dedicated to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Hungary.

The exhibition at the Art Palace will last till December 15, but the artist’s original paintings will be on display only until December 6. Art Palace is located at Kargareteli Street #6, Tbilisi.

On December 5, ART Palace exposition hall will be open till 8 pm. The ticket prices are as follows : for adults - 2 Gel and for the teenagers up to 16 – 1 GEL.
The Mihaly Zichy exhibition is organized with the support of Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia, Embassy of Hungary in Tbilisi and National Gallery of Budapest.

The first illustrated publication of Rustaveli’s Knight in the Panther’s Skin is connected to Mihaly Zichy. In 1881 he was in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he started working on illustrations for The Knight in the Panther's Skin at the request of the Georgian noblemen.

He painted 35 pictures in total. The publishing commission of the work of The Knight in the Panther's Skin chose 27 illustrations to be included in the publication. The painter refused to take payment for the works, so impressed was he by the poem itself. Instead, he gifted the works to the Georgian people.

Mihály Zichy was a distinguished representative of Hungarian romantic painting. He was born in 1827 in Hungary, after graduating from university; he studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. From 1847, Zichy was invited to Russia and became an artist of Russia’s Royal Court, paining portraits of four of Russia’s emperors.

From 1850 onwards, he worked as a retoucher, but he also did pencil drawings, water colours and portraits in oil. His erotic drawings have a particular warm intensity in which both members of the couple seem equal partners.
