Georgian film The Trader wins Sundance Film Festival

Short film The Trader by Georgian director Tamta Gabrichidze, which has been purchased by Netflix earlier this month, is the winner of Sundance Film Festival.

Tamta Gabrichidze's The Trader (Sovdagari in Georgian) claimed the Short Film Jury Award.

The festival is set to continue running through Sunday.

This is the second Georgian film to be broadcast on Netflix after My Happy Family directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross, which
has been available on Netflix starting 1 December 2017.

This 23-minute film follows the story of a trader named Gela, who travels by a minivan through Georgia to sell everyday goods and second-hand clothing. Money is not importantin this market—potatoes are used instead of the cash.

Tamta Gabrichidze receives the Sundance award at the festival

Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Tamta holds a bachelor’s degree in film directing from the Film and Theatre University of Georgia and studied public relations at the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs. After working for nine years in different positions for films and TV shows, she is now a freelance writer/director and collaborates with different companies. She is currently working on her debut fiction film September and new documentary MUGAMATI.

The Sundance Film Festival, a program of the Sundance Institute, is a film festival that takes place annually in Park City, Utah. With over 46,660 attendees in 2017, it is the largest independent film festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, as well as at the Sundance Resort, the festival is a showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers.
