Emerging Georgian director Mariam Khatchvani’s feature Dede, which is the winner of many international festivals, will be shown in Georgian cinemas from February 22. The film has already gained great success and recognition throughout the world and finally, Georgian audience will be able to evaluate it as well.

Young Georgian actress Natia Vibliani is best known for her role played in Dede, which brought her international success. In Dede, Natia plays Dina, a girl surrounded by harsh traditions in Georgia’s mountainous Svaneti Region, who fights to protect her love.

Dede was premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and screened in East of West section where it won Special Mention prize.

Film was made by several companies: Film and Music Entertainment (Sam Taylor, Mike Downey), MP Film Production (Igor A. Nola), Montauk Film Production; in association with Jaja Film Productions (Conrad Alleblas, Jamillah Van Der Hulst), Dutch Film Club; with support of Doha Film Institute and Georgian National Film Center.

Dede is a drama about love and the ancient traditions, which still govern the lives of local people. It is especially important that the film is shot in the historic region with UNESCO's World Heritage Status in Svaneti, Georgia’s historic highland.

It is noteworthy that Dede won several prestigious film festivals, such as Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Australian Pacific Screen Awards, where it was bestowed with the Cultural Diversity Award, a prize granted under the patronage of UNESCO.

Mariam Khatchvani graduated in 2008 from the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University, Tbilisi. She has directed many short documentaries, including Verdzoba (2006), Beyond the Window (2007), Lichanishi and Kvirikoba (2009). Dinola (2013) is her latest fiction short.
