Nikoloz Antidze, Head of Cultural Heritage Agency coins the fact as ‘vandalism’ and claims that this act will not remain unpunished.

In the beginning of the twentieth century, there was located a cafe named The Boat of Argonauts.

This was the only example of Kirill Zdanevich’s painting that represented a unique cultural monument. In 2016, with the support and funding of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia, the group of artists of the Academy of Art conducted a full scientific research in Tbilisi, which was supposed to become the basis for full rehabilitation of the mural on the wall.

As the representatives of the agency report, they warned the owner of the area several times that the mural on the wall was of a historic importance and inappropriate intervention would destroy the artwork. “We wanted to sign an agreement that would oblige the owners to take care of the area, but the historic monument was destroyed before signing the contract.”

According to the current owner of the area, when they hired the space, the painting was already destroyed.

“This case should be investigated, which envisages imposing criminal liability," the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia reports.
