Two productions by Georgian film studio 20 Steps to compete at Cannes and SHORT OF THE YEAR
Georgian cinema continues to reach new heights and earns international success year by year. Georgian production companies are developing at a fast pace, producing local movies as well as work on foreign ones as well.

There are some great news for the fans of Georgian cinema - foreign film Girls of the Sun shot in Georgia and co-produced by Georgian production company 20 Steps has recently been shortlisted in the main competition of Cannes Film Festival, while another Georgian animation
Lile, produced by the same company, selected in the competition program of the festival "SHORT OF THE YEAR."

Both films are produced by 20 Steps Productions, an independent production company which was founded in 2010 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The official Facebook page of the production company has recently published spread the information about their international success.

“Great news from Cannes Film Festival. Our film "GIRLS OF THE SUN" is in the main competition,” reads the post.

The 71st annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Cannes Film Festival is held in Cannes, France. It previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from all around the world.

Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

Girls of the Sun is one of the successful foreign films shot in Georgia. French filmmaker Eva Husson’s Girls of the Sun centers on a battalion of Kurdish female fighters. The Georgian co-producer is 20 Steps Prods.

The script of the Girls of the Sun is as follows: somewhere in Kurdistan, a young lawyer visits her family. In a bloody attack led by extremists, her husband is killed and she’s taken prisoner with her son and thousands of other women and children.

A few months after her escape, she’s now the commander of the “Girls of the Sun”, a female battalion.

The main goal of her is to take back the town where she was captured and bring back her hostage son. By her side, a veteran war reporter follows the daily life of the “Girls of the Sun” during the 3 days of the offensive. The main character of the film shares with war reporter the succession of events that brought these women here together, united by their quest for hope and justice.

Out of this unimaginable situation, a universal sisterhood is born: the bond between the “Girls of the Sun”.

As for Georgian animation Lile, it is the debut work of Georgian director and animator Natia Nikolashvili . The short animation will participate in the prestigious competition program of the festival "SHORT OF THE YEAR."

Each year, the Short Film Conference (a global network uniting the short film industry) and its members elect the ‘Short of the Year’. There’s a simple voting procedure that consists of three rounds: first voting round ends in a shortlist, second voting round ends with four to seven nominations and the third/final part of the voting eventually decides the winner.

The official dates of the Festival, which will last six days, will be published after the deadline of the contest, in May 15th, 2018, along with the program.

The previous winners of the festival were the following films: ‘Min Börda,’ a short film directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr in 2017 and Home, directed by Daniel Mulloy in 2016.

It is noteworthy that the name Lile [lee-leh] originates from Georgia’s remote Svaneti Region and means the sun. Also it is the name of the goddess of the sun. The team back of the animation is as follows: director and animator Natia Nikolashvili, producer Vladimer Kacharava.
