Night in Museum – All major museums of Georgia welcome visitors for free today
Today all the major museums throughout Georgia open their doors for free to the visitors late at night. Night in Museum is a special event that annually takes place in Georgia. On May 19 at 9 pm the National Museum of Georgia welcomes everyone to showcase the masterpieces and heritage kept in the museum. As part of the event, almost all the museums
in Georgia will also host a number of visitors for free and offer various interesting programs. Night in Museum starts at 9 pm and last until 1 am.

The event Night in Museum launched in 2005 by European Council and since then is regularly held in the member countries of European Council. Later, Night in Museum turned into a large-scale event and spread in many countries throughout the world.

The Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia initiated established Night in Museum as a tradition in 2015.

Georgian National Museum is well-known for the special artifacts and masterpieces kept in its galleries. The most famous artifact preserved at National Museum is Zezva and Mzia - the oldest evidence of humans discovered outside of Africa, dating back 1.8 million years. The sculptures of the first Europeans - Zezva and Mzia are preserved at Dmanisi Museum-Reserve.

In 1990s, a sensational discovery was made in Georgia - male and female bones, whose age amounted to at least 1.8 million years. The scientists quickly gave these ancient humans their names, Zezva and Mzia, and the title, Homo Georgicus. Besides, they proved that these are the oldest representatives of Human species after the ones that were discovered in Africa.
