Pianist Giorgi Mikadze performs in the US marking Independence Day of Georgia

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Establishment of Democratic Republic of Georgia. The historic date is celebrated through various events not only in Georgia, but beyond its borders as well. This year the 100th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Georgia is celebrated in Washington and New York through performances by Georgian musicians .

In relation to the historic date, fellow musician Giorgi Mikadze performed in front of the audience in the US within the frames of the project „Georgian Overtones“. Even though Independence Day of Georgia is marked on May 26, the concerts were held earlier, on May 23 at the United States Institute of Peace and on May 24, at the ECOSOC Chamber, United Nations Headquarters, New York.

Along with Giorgi Mikadze the audience had an opportunity to listen to performance by Sandro Sidamonidze along with Benjamin Tiberio - double bass, Raphael Pannier - drums and Uri Gurvich - saxophone.

The program included performance by members of the folk Ensemble Basiani trio: Sergo Urushadze (Oberstimme), Paata Tsetskhladze (Mittelstimme) and Zurab Tskrialashvili (Bassstimme).

The innovative musical project "Georgian Overtones" is a kind of cultural collaboration, comprising of elements of Georgian folk music, classic and jazz.

Basiani ensemble

Georgian pianist Giorgi Mikadze was planning to implement this kind of project for quite a long time. He is the author of two important projects: “Voisa” (in collaboration with the Georgian vocal ensemble Basiani) and “Georgian Overtones” with the participation of celebrity jazz performers based in New York.

‘Georgian Overtones’ was first performed in August 2017 in Berlin within the frames of the Young Euro Classic festival. The group was joined by JazzFest Berlin Artistic Director Nils Landgren, Kongsberg Jazz Festival award-winning bassist Ellen Andrea Wang, Echo Jazz Newcomer of the Year Eva Klesse and Swedish Jazz Final Best Soloist Award recipient Bjoern Atle Anfinsen. It is worth mentioning that the joint concert of successful Georgian and German musicians was transmitted live on French-German TV channel ARTE.

The above-mentioned event was held within the frames of international festival „Young Euro Classic“, which represents one of the prestigious events in Europe.

This time, the project of Giorgi Mikadze was chosen for celebrating the most important date in the history of Georgia. The event was jointly organized in the USA by the Embassy of Georgia to the United States and Permanent Mission of Georgia to the United Nations, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture and Sport of Georgia. The partners of the project are YAMAHA Artist Services and the Georgian Art Agency.
