Georgian Ana Urushadze among 10 female directors at Sidney Film Festival
Award-winning Georgian director Ana Urushadze is among 10 female filmmakers whose works will be screened at Sydney Film Festival 2018. Emerging Georgian director Ana Urushadze, best known for her 2017 drama film Scary Mother, will attend prestigious Sydney International Film Festival.

The ten films by women directors were picked from a shortlist of 37 films. The festival will roll out on June 6 and last until June 17, bringing the best of world
cinema to Australia.The young Georgian director’s award-winning feature Scary Mother will be part of the Europe! Voices of Women in Film section. . The event "Women's Voice in Cinema" is supported by European Film Promotion.

It is noteworthy that Ana is the daughter of famous Georgian director Zaza Urushadze, who directed Oscar nominee drama film Tangerines. Despite her age (Ana was born in 1990), the audience unanimously claimed her special and exciting approach towards the stereotypes that are well-known for everyone.

It is also noteworthy that last year another female Georgian director Rusudan Glurjidze’s film “the House of the others” was screened at Sydney International Film Festival.

The competitive film festival draws international and local attention, with films being showcased in several venues across the city center and includes features, documentaries, short films, retrospectives, films for families and animations. The festival founded in 1954 has a long history. Ana Urushadze’s debut work Scary Mother unveils the story of Manana, a middle-aged woman, who hopes to find herself by secretly penning a darkly erotic thriller. She hides the writing from her husband Anri, but tensions heighten after she lets him read an excerpt.



The film was funded by the National Film Center. It is a co-production of Georgia (studios "Artizm" and "Gemini") and Estonia (studio "Allfilms"). Renowned Georgian actress Nato Murvanidze plays the lead role in the film.

Scary Mother was premiered at the 2017 Locarno International Film Festival and received the First Feature Award.

It is also worth mentioning that The Calvert Journal, a London-based online guide to the contemporary culture of the New East, has named Scary Mother among the best films to watch in 2018.
