Georgia to win Europa-Nostra Prize 2018
EU Prize for Cultural Heritage awarded countries for their outstanding heritage achievements during the Excellence Fair at the Allianz Forum in Berlin on June 21. Organized by Europa Nostra and the European Commission with the support of the Creative Europe programs of the European Union, the Excellence Fair is among the main events of the European Cultural Heritage Summit.

inners of the 2018 edition of the Awards from all over Europe shared their exemplary accomplishments in conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising. This year the Heritage Excellence Fair took place on June 21 at the Allianz Forum Berlin.

Georgia represented the research project “Textiles from Georgia” and gained the EU Heritage prize for a scientific research. The jury has evaluated the theme and the originality of the project and paid great attention to the research about frescos. They pointed out the relationship between cultures revealed throughout the research.
Art palace of Georgia had been working on the project for two years. The project aimed to investigate the long history of Georgian fabrics and to transmit forgotten craft techniques to contemporary society.

Unique collection of the textiles at the Art Palace was in a very bad condition.With the Ministry of culture and Sport of Georgia and the private educational fund, Art Palace provided essential conversation and restoration of the textiles. Scientific study took place and historical textiles were survived from destruction. The goal of the project was not only to study the fabrics but also to emphasize their value and significance for the region. A group of artists and scientists worked to recreate clothes of Georgian kings, queens and noblemen based on ancient manuscripts, frescos and miniatures.

The extensive research explored the relationship and influence between Caucasian, Asian and European cultures. Georgian art has always been open to absorb something unique from various ethnic groups. The group of the scientific research had been studying royal garments, graphical forms of textiles and fresco paintings on Georgian churches and monasteries. In total more than 400 patterns and 50 historic fabrics were restored.

With the support of the Ministry, the manufactory of Georgian textiles is going to be established in Georgia. It will focus on creating textiles based on restored historic frescos.
