Tbilisi Jazz Series – Jazz Becomes Pop Music

Jazz music is always destined only for certain strata of society and this is probably the main thing that makes it so different from the pop. It is not for everyone and therefore, it has much less fans and admirers. However, the jazz concerts are not a rarity for Tbilisi cultural life. It is Joshua Redman, famous saxophone player who, along with his trio, will perform at Tbilisi Event Hall on February 19.

Joshua Redman (Sax), Reuben Rogers (Bass) and

Greg Hutchinson (Drums) will be the guests of Tbilisi city after Istanbul. “I call it the lessons of the musical taste”, Kakha Kandelaki from Eastern Promotion told Georgian Journal. “I can tell you that Jazz never stops developing while pop music is frozen and it never goes forward. I am amazed to see that 80% of the public to our concerts is the youth, and this is what amazes our foreign stars as well.”

Reportedly, the interest has really been raised towards this music because young people don’t buy tickets for showing off (at least a big part of it) but they do listen to the coming musicians on the Internet beforehand and go to hear them live quite well prepared. It’s also worth noting that in spite of the long distance from its cradle, jazz has always been loved in tight circles of Georgia, however, it seems much more fashionable now, whereas earlier it was only reachable for high intellectuals. Presently, the age of jazz listeners in Georgia varies from 20 to 40 years. Has our IQ been increased? What an interesting datum!

Kakha Kandelaki who is the founder of Eastern Promotion, the company that has restored the jazz traditions in Georgia, admits that it is very nice for the Georgian national image that such a small country as we are has such a high taste that it longs for jazz concerts and this was the reason why annual Black Sea Jazz Festival and Tbilisi Jazz Festival is not merely enough and monthly Jazz series have started. Tickets are sold out. Let’s wait for the concert and hope for the unforgettable jazz lessons that will be kept during the last four months.

Joshua Redman has performed with such grand masters as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck and many others. He has also appeared with David Bowie, Rolling Stones and other rock stars. Jazz series aim to be held in the atmosphere similar to American jazz clubs and the tables are disposed respectively. This is the idea in order to create the more casual and warmer interaction between listeners and performers. Tbilisi is the last city in the European tour for Joshua Redman Trio.
