Festivity of Georgian Gene at Tbilisi Concert Hall

oOn March 24, Tbilisi Concert Hall hosted a breathtaking performance of unrivaled Sukhishvili Georgian National Ballet Company. It was enough to watch one of those dances and get utterly enthralled.

It was a wonderful opportunity for all those who have always cherished this great art. This is the case when every Georgian feels proud that he/she is a Georgian. It was a nice discovery too for those foreigners (and they were abundant) who had the opportunity to see this marvel for

the first time. It was the memorial program that included the unchanged dances as they were staged originally by great maestros and founders of Sukhishvili National Ballet. However, professionals agree that even in the old program (Sukhishvili has the new, modernized program as well), a significant progress in technique is more than visible.

Omar Mkheidze who was one of the most prominent soloists of all times, dancing under the supervision of great Nino Ramishvili and Iliko Sukhishvili, commented: “I am in heaven with joy. This is the festivity of the Georgian gene. They possess a nice plasticity. These dances are our visiting card in the world. This very program has managed to mesmerize the whole world – we have conquered the prominent stages of 87 different states.” He added in exclusive talks with Georgian Journal that if earlier only the soloists could cope with certain artistic tasks, now almost each member of the ensemble is equally capable, which makes it even more effective. However, I would add  that the coin has two sides and this is probably why we don’t have many leading personalities as before.

It was a nice collage of dances of all the regions of Georgia. The synchrony was as amazing as always in Khorumi men’s dancing, and the tenderness and glamour of a Georgian woman was particularly strongly felt in the solo Jeirani performance as well as in the women’s trio dance called Samaia. I would call this program a live museum of the best qualities of Georgian man and woman, with all its manners and gestures, attitude between one another and of course, sparkling and very effective palette of costumes.

H.E. Mr. John Bass, Ambassador of US to Georgia was one of the most respectable guests of the concert. “I can’t think of better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of US-Georgian relations, which was today, the 24th of March. Just a terrific performance with such a great variety of styles, the dancers showed so much of the cultural diversity of Georgia. I enjoyed it very much,” John Bass commented exclusively for Georgian Journal.

Manana Abazadze, one of the most beautiful and famous female veteran dancers said: “I was so excited and felt every minute of it as if I was dancing myself. I am glad. They were really remarkable – all of them. I am extremely happy that the great tradition is kept up. During Khorumi I was really crying. And those dances that I was performing myself were particularly emotional to watch of course.

Tiko Elbakidze, young girl shared her impressions too: “I am delighted by the concert. I can say that it was a performance that you would watch for ever, never wishing to end.”
