Five most spectacular rivers of Georgia
Georgia is rich in water resources. There are approximately 26 060 rivers and 840 lakes in the country. Here we present five most famous and spectacular rivers of Georgia.
Alazani

The Alazani is a river that flows through the Caucasus. It is the main tributary of the Mtkvari River in eastern Georgia, and flows for 351 kilometers. Part of its path forms the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan. It is the longest river in Georgia.

The river is mainly used for
irrigation and for drinking water. In the 1990s, Chinese investors built many small hydroelectric power plants, which use the Alazani's strong current. The river is also popular with tourists for rafting trip.

Aragvi

The Aragvi River and its basin are in Georgia on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. The river is 112 kilometers long.The White Aragvi flows from Gudauri down to the town of Pasanauri, where it is joined by the Black Aragvi, the main river of Gudamakari to the north-east. Together, the black and white Aragvi flow south-east to the Jinvali Reservoir, where it is joined by the Pshav Aragvi before flowing south to merge with the Mtkvari River by Mtskheta, Eastern Georgia's ancient capital just north of Tbilisi.

Enguri


The Enguri is a river in western Georgia. It is 213 kilometres long, originates in northeastern Svaneti near the region of Racha and plays an important role providing hydroelectric power to the area.

The river emerges from the high Caucasus near the highest mountain in Georgia, Shkhara, and winds through the mountain valleys to the northwest before turning southwest to empty into the Black Sea . The river plays an important role in the Georgian energy production.

Mtkvari

Starting in northeastern Turkey, the Mtkvari River flows through Turkey to Georgia, then to Azerbaijan, where it receives the Aras as a right tributary, and enters the Caspian Sea. The total length of the river is 1,515 kilometers.Previously navigable up to Tbilisi in Georgia, it is now much slower and shallower, as its power has been harnessed by hydroelectric power stations. The river is now moderately polluted by major industrial centers like Tbilisi and Rustavi in Georgia.

Rioni

The Rioni River is the main river of western Georgia. It originates in the Caucasus Mountains, in the region of Racha and flows west to the Black Sea, entering it north of the city of Poti (near ancient Phasis). The city of Kutaisi, once the ancient city of Colchis, lies on its banks. The river is 327 kilometers long.
