If you want to enjoy incredible flora and fauna of Georgia’s beautiful region of Adjara, definitely pay a visit to Mtirala National Park, a protected area that is located in the western part of the country and you will not regret. The territory of Mtirala is constructed by volcanic-sedimentary rocks of so-called “Naghvarevi Pack”.

Mount Mtirala is located between the Black Sea and Achara mountain system. Adjara is rich in atmospheric precipitation since it is a
coastal region, but the Mount Mtirala, height of which is 1381 m above sea level, is the most abundant with precipitation. Annual precipitation reaches to 4520 mm in the area making it the wettest area in the country. That is why the place is called Mtirala that in Georgian means constantly crying.

Due to its climate, you will come across unique subtropical plants. The park is rich with pristine Colchic humid broad-leaved and mixed forests, including sweet chestnut and Oriental beech woods with pontic rhododendron, cherry laurel and a variety of lianas.

The protected area of Mtirala is inhabited by Brown bear, Roe deer, Wild boar, Booted eagle, Eagle-owl, Golden oriel, Caucasian squirrel. The list of amphibians is as follows: Caucasian salamander, Caucasian toad, Eurasian mash frog and Caucasian viper. The role of Mtirala Park is significant since it prevents the area from erosion, landslides and flooding.
