Lakes that nature created out of love for Georgians
Georgia is home to many breathtaking sights that wouldn’t look out of place in a dreamscape; they are part of the reason for the country’s uniqueness and popularity with tourists. Georgia also has an abundance of water, which results in its landscape being extremely rich in lakes of all kinds. Starting with seemingly bottomless pits and ending with lakes shaped like the country itself, there is no perceivable limit to Mother Nature’s fantasy.

Oreti Lake, nicknamed Green Abyss by travelers,
appears unexpectedly, hidden amongst rosebay bushes, its waters murky and green. Fed by a small rivulet flowing from the cliffs above, the lake is a popular resting place for hikers and shepherds alike.

Georgian Journal’s attention was recently drawn by two of the country’s regions, as beautiful as they are different – Samegrelo and Tusheti. The latter is located in the north, right behind the Caucasus Mountains’ dividing ridge. Unlike other corners of Georgia, Tusheti is not particularly water-rich – it only geotv.gehas two rivers and several small lakes.

One of these is Oreti Lake, nicknamed Green Abyss by travelers. When trekking through the mountains, it appears unexpectedly, hidden amongst rosebay bushes, its waters murky and green. Fed by a small rivulet flowing from the cliffs above, the lake is a popular resting place for hikers and shepherds alike, similar to an oasis among endless, steely mountains.

From the foot of Egrisi mountain range, an amazing view of snow-covered peaks, emerald forests and a heart-shaped Kaliashi Lake opens up. This lake is located at 2600m above sea level and is fed by snowfall, rainfall and underwater currents, which Georgia has plenty of.

Standing at an altitude of 2650m above sea level, Oreti Lake offers an amazing view on almost the entirety of Tusheti as well as part of Georgia’s northern border. The vicinity of the lake is also home to numerous animals such as deer, wild goats and even bears. The route to the lake starts at the visitor center in the village of Kvemo Omalo and follows a motorway to the village of Kumelauri. From there, a traveler has to follow a foot trail to the lake proper.

In Samegrelo, the situation is drastically different. Here it looks as if Mother Nature itself took a chisel to the landscape out of love for Georgia.

Just like the beautiful lakes of Tobavarchkhili, Kaliashi is a freshwater lake without any fish.

Shape of the lake, which occurred naturally, attracts many tourists, Georgian and foreign alike; many compare the view that opens from the lake’s location to a view of paradise.
