A trip to winter Svaneti: Medieval castles meet modern ski resort
Svaneti, Georgia’s historical highland, is a popular destination among tourists during summer season, yet after the new Tetnuldi Ski Resort was opened and the infrastructure improved, the place became a real hub for winter sports lovers and travel enthusiasts. In winter Svaneti is equally beautiful and transforms into a winter wonderland with thrilling mountain peaks and medieval towers. Famous Georgian photographer Giorgi Nikolava was lucky enough to visit Svaneti in winter and depict its beauties with his camera. Those who
have not seen white Svaneti can check out these wonderful images and plan their future trip.

Tetnuldi

“It was my dream to visit Svaneti in winter, yet I was not planning to go there so soon, when suddenly I was offered to go on a tour by a tour company Traveler GE. I was filled with joy, that my longtime dream finally came true and I had a chance to see snow-covered Svaneti. We arrived at dawn in Mestia (regional center) and without having a rest I directly set off to capture the landscapes. The very next day was very impressive; we ascended Tetnuldi Mountain where the new Ski Resort was opened. There are three cable cars and the third one takes you up above 3000 meters. The ski track is 9,5 kilometers long”, - Giorgi Nikolava told Georgian Journal.

There are several ways to get to Svaneti all year round. One can travel by helicopter from Natakhtari (65 -75 GEL one way), hire Delica or get there by a route taxi (30 GEL per person) that,as a rule, sets off from Railway Station in Tbilisi. The distance between Tbilisi and Mestia is 490 kilometers and takes 7-8 hours to get there by car. One can stay at local guest houses, in a hotel or even spend a night in the medieval towers owned by local families.
