Khvantchkara – Extraordinary Georgian wine produced since 1870s in Racha

Viticulture and winemaking is one of the oldest fields in all the Georgian regions and Racha is no exception. The peasants in Racha have been perfecting the vines, improving their fertility, as well as the methods of care and cultivation rules.

Dr. David Magradze, the Head of Accounting and Analysis Department of the National Wine Agency, told us about Khvanchkara wine, its origins and uniqueness.
- Can you tell us where does the name Khvanchkara come from?

- Khvanchkara or Kipianis’
Wine as it is often referred to, was first produced in 1870s according to the oldest traditions of winemaking that was spread throughout Racha region. This wine was made of two species of grapes – Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli.

The prince of Racha, Kipiani, used the method of making the sweet wine and decided to make a wider production and soon after that, Khvanchkara was recognized as one of the best wine locally as well as in the entire Kutaisi Governorate.

Prince Kipiani was responsible for promoting this wine. As for the abovementioned species of grapes, Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli, they are old species and they were used for making other types of wine.

As far as the name Khvanchkara is concerned, it is the name of the village where Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli are mostly cultivated.

- What is it that gives it its unique taste and characteristics?


- The uniqueness of Khvanchkara is first of all due to its location and the methods of care. It can, without any external additives, collect sugar for itself. It must also be noted that the peasants in Racha were always making wines in October, then keeping them in special cellars, where the wine kept its sweetness. The climatic factors are also to be taken into consideration.

- What successes and recognition did Kvanchkara achieve during its existence?

- During Soviet period, it was widely recognized as one of the best wines in the whole country and today it is a part of various competitions, exhibitions and festivals. Khvanchkara has earned numerous prizes and it’s still very popular in the countries that were part of Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, etc.).

This is interesting:

Kipiani’s wine earned its first medal in 1900 at the agricultural exhibition held in the town of Batumi. As for the international recognition, in 1907 it received Grand-Prix at the exhibition held in Belgium.

In 1996, at various international exhibitions, it received 5 golden and one silver medals and in 2000, in the town of Sochi, earned Grand-Prix.
