Archaeologists make a unique discovery on the territory of the David Gareji Complex, Georgia
Georgian archaeologists revealed another mystery of the inhabitants of the cells of the medieval cave complex David Gareji.

Specialists of the National Museum of Georgia discovered copper utensils, ceramics and candlesticks in St. David's Lavra, which is a complex of monastic cells and additional rooms carved into the rock.

Archaeologists believe that
the items date back to the late Middle Ages. It is noteworthy that all the items are perfectly preserved.

One of the leaders of the expedition, professor of the State University of Ilya Nodar Bakhtadze, reported on the finding on his Facebook page.

"Presumably, this treasure was hidden by the members of the monastic brotherhood during the invasion of the Persian conquerors, in the early 17th century," - Bakhtadze wrote.

According to the professor, the discovery was made in the process of pre-reconstruction archaeological works.

David Garedji Complex dates back to the 6th century and today it is considered one of the main shrines and historical sights of Georgia. The site is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The complex is located 60 kilometers southeast of Tbilisi, on the Georgian-Azerbaijani border, which divides the complex into two parts. David Garedji represents about 20 monasteries carved into the rocks and covers the territories of three regions of Georgia - Gardabani, Sagarejo and Signagi.

The monastery was founded by one of the holy fathers who brought monasticism to Georgia - St. David of Gareja. He came to Georgia from Syria in the middle of the VI century, together with the Monk John of Zedazeni.
