Popular American magazine on the evidence of world's oldest grape wine discovered in Georgia
22 November, 2017
The oldest evidence of wine-making found in Georgia has been spotlighted by the famous American weekly magazine Time. As a reminder, archaeologists excavating Neolithic Georgian village have recently found pieces of clay pots containing residues of the world's oldest wine.
This historic evidence once again proves the fact that Georgia is a real cradle of wine.

A series of excavations in the Caucasus Mountains has revealed wine residue on pottery fragments dating back to 5980 BC — the earliest evidence discovered yet of wine-making from grapes.

“Archaeologists found the earthenware jar fragments at two sites near Tbilisi, Georgia. Some of the jars were originally decorated with images of wine-making festivities, portraying men dancing amid grape clusters” – the article reads.

Previously, the oldest evidence of grape wine-making was identified in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, dating to about 5400 to 5000 BC.

Meanwhile, Hvino News, English information site focused on Georgia's winemaking, tourism, and hospitality industries, publishes Georgia’s Prime Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s statement on research findings recognizing Georgia as homeland of wine.

“Very intensive work has been done by the group of international scientists, and I’m sure everyone is delighted that the research is finalized, and it was acknowledged that the eldest wine was discovered in Georgia. We have a chance to positively introduce our country internationally in this regard, and this gave us the possibility to represent Georgia in the the Center of Wine Civilizations in Bordeaux, ” - Giorgi Kvirikashvili commented on the results of the research, published by National Academy of Sciences of the United States.

“I’m sure this scientific work will continue, and we’ll discover more interesting facts on wine making traditions and wine in Georgia” the Prime Minister commented during the weekly government meeting. – Hvino News reports.

"We are excited and proud, and so is every Georgian and every friend of Georgia. I congratulate all of you!" the Prime Minister stated.
