Georgia’s ancient rock carvings included in the Prehistoric Rock Art Trails
Georgia became the member of International Association of the ancient trails. The ancient rock carvings petroglyphs found in Georgia have been recognized as part of a Europe wide network of Prehistoric Rock Art Trails highlighting tourist destinations in the country.

The recognition came as the International Association of the ancient trails accepted Georgia’s National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation as its full member earlier this month.

Georgia became the eighth member after Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Norway and Azerbaijan.

The National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia was presented on November 16-18 of the current year at Cultural Route Forum of the Council of Europe in Trigueros, Spain. Within the frames of “Prehistoric Rock Art” route, Georgia will be represented with the complex of ancient rock petroglyphs (images carved into stone) found in Trialeti. The agency has already given the cultural heritage monuments title to the petroglyphs discovered near the town of Tsalka, 100km west of capital Tbilisi.

The Trialeti petroglyphs are geometric images carved on rock formations in six separate groups spanning around 50m in length.

The figures carved in the images depict local fauna including horses and deer as well as images of snakes, birds and hybrid forms. Geometric figures including the sun, crosses and square grids are also part of the ancient artwork.

Historians have dated the fauna of the Trialeti carvings from the late Pleistocene (the era between 2,588,000 to 11,700 years ago) to Holocene (about 11,700 years to present).

By joining the Council of Europe's Cultural Routes "Prehistoric Rock Art", Georgia’s tourism potential will be shown better throughout Europe. This important event will promote the tourist destinations in the country.
