Georgian specialists to rehabilitate abandoned Oshki dome in Tao-Klarjeti
A group of Georgian specialists and scientists have been sent to Tao-Klarjeti, a historic province that used to belong to Georgia in order to examine the abandoned monument of Oshki dome. Within the frames of their visit they will carry out rehabilitation works in Georgia’s historic and cultural monument. located in Oshki is a Georgian church dating back the second half of the 10th century located in the historic province of Tao, now part of of Turkey. The information was
released by Head of National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation Nikoloz Antidze.

According to him, the group of 5 people have been sent:experts: architect-restorer, archaeologist, art critic and constructor. They will get involved in rehabilitation works from tomorrow and carry out important works in cooperation with Turkish specialists. Georgian specialists will return from Turkey until June 11 after which many details will be revealed.

The rehabilitation works of Oshki dome will start in accordance with an agreement between Georgian and Turkish governments.

The main church of Oshki was built between 963 and 973. The monastery is located in Turkey, in the village of Çamlıyamaç, in northeastern Erzurum Province, bordering Artvin Province.

Oshki monastery was a major center of Georgian literature and enlightenment during the Middle Ages. The construction of the monastery at Oshki was sponsored by the Georgian Kings Bagrat Eristavt-Eristavi (prince of princes) and David III Bagrationi Kuropalates.
